How to play & the math

How to play

  1. Pick two racers.
  2. Choose the one that doubles its speed every second. The other keeps its normal speed.
  3. Choose the finish line, from a 100 m sprint to the Sun, 150 million km away.
  4. Tap the one you think will win and the race starts. You can share the result as a link.

How fast is "doubling every second"?

After 10 seconds the speed is about 1,000 times the start, after 20 seconds about a million times, and after 30 seconds about a billion times. That is why even the slowest racer overtakes everything within a minute.

The speed is v × 2t, where v is the starting speed and t is seconds since the start. The distance covered is v × (2t − 1) ÷ 0.693 (0.693 is the natural log of 2).

Seconds to reach each finish while doubling

Racer100 mTokyo→OsakaEarthMoonSun
Snail (1 mm/s)16.128.134.738.046.6
Turtle (5 cm/s)10.422.429.132.340.9
Human (1.4 m/s)5.717.624.227.536.1
Bicycle (5.5 m/s)3.815.622.325.534.1
Rabbit (60 km/h)2.414.020.723.932.5
Bullet train (320 km/h)0.811.618.321.530.1
Rocket (7.9 km/s)0.015.211.815.023.7

At its normal pace a snail would need about 13 years to get from Tokyo to Osaka. Doubling, it takes 28 seconds. The snail starts 50 times slower than the turtle, yet arrives only about 6 seconds later, because six doublings already make 64 times.

Who wins?

The doubling racer is behind at first. It matches the other's speed after log2(other speed ÷ its own start) seconds — about 17 seconds for a turtle against a rocket. It is still far behind at that point, but catches up within a few more seconds. A near finish ends the race before that happens; a far one lets the doubler win. The racers can pass the speed of light; the game ignores physics and just follows the math.
